Day 5 was our Whistler day. We caught a bus not too far from where we are staying in Burnaby (still Vancouver but just a 20 min. train ride from downtown.) It took about 90 min. to get to the Village of Whistler. It was raining a bit but the drive is so beautiful! The mountains on one side and in front of you and Howe Sound (water way) on the other side. We got to Whistler and after a quick bite we took the gondola up to the Whistler Sliding Centre. You would not believe how fast the luge goes! You can see a picture just how fast below. The camera has a very fast shutter speed but I could not capture them... they are moving over 145 km/hr on the curve we were at. It was amazing to be there and feeling the excitement.
Day 6 WHAT AN AMAZING DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CANADA WON ITS FIRST GOLD AND FIRST ONE EVER ON HOME SOIL AT THE WINTER GAMES!
We didn't do much in the morning, just explored our own area close to where we are staying. Since we had tickets to women's hockey at 4:30 we didn't have to go downtown to get to the arena. The game was great and it was nice being inside for a change. Mind you this is the first day in a few that there was no showers, so it would have been nice to be outside. It was 13 C and sunny here today.
Finland and Russia played and the Fins were so much better. They won, 5-1.
NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS! As part of the tickets we purchased, we had a medal/victory ceremony for Monday night. Now this just happens to be the ticket everyone now wants! Our first gold will be handed out tomorrow night. Yes, we get to sing Oh Canada for the first time. That I'm sure will be the highlight of our Olympic Experience!!! Stay tuned for a special posting tomorrow night, if we can stand the excitement!
It was so fun reading about your experience in Vancouver. We caught yesterdays events on the TV and thought of you. I am missing you at work but glad you are having a wonderful time. Say hello to Gail & Jim for me!
