Day 4 The Opening Ceremonies
All we can say is WOW! We came into the city in late morning and already you could feel that something was in the air. The crowds were bigger and excitement level was up and there were people and security everywhere. We walked around most of the early afternoon and took in some of the pavillions. The Bell Pavillion was very cool. It was called the "The Cube" If you ever watched the most recent Star Trek it was like the Borg. When you entered they gave us all real nice earbuds to keep. We could plug into the hive/cube so we could hear things about the Olympics. We also met up with Carter, a Vice Principal from Moncton, who Greg knows and went to an Aussie restaurant.
About 4:00 we began to look for a place where we could settle in and watch the Opening Ceremonies. The first place we went to ... well let's just say the security line was about 2 hours long just to get into the place. So we hopped on a subway to Robson St. That is where we got one of the best places to watch the event with about 10,000 other people. We were talking to some workers and they told us that a big projector was going to project the TV coverage on a wall. Well we got there and stood on these'concrete risers... and soon it started and tons of people were all around us but we were all above their heads. See the pictures.
It was so cool to hear the crowds and the screams... well we were part of those screams too.
At the end... we started to move closer to the subway... since we figured it would be HELL to leave when everyone else was. Well we ended up on being at the right place at the right time by accident. Yes, "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky, drove right by us with the torch. NOW that was cool!
Well tomorrow brings us to our first event, Luge. To Whistler we go.
I watched the opening ceremonies - (every minute! wern't they AWESOME??), and wondered where you two were! we were looking for you! It must have been great to be there! (The girl who sang O Canada was incredible - but I wonder why they would mess with the melody...What did you guys think?) But it was all AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteHave Fun!!
I was ready to belt out OH CANADA too being everyone there who was CDN was feeling pretty proud. It was good but it would have been great to hear how well the song would have sounded with all of us singing.

ReplyDeletethe ceremony was AMAZING. i especially liked the initial welcome from the 4 first nations, and the poem about Canada "We Are More". as a future Canadian, I understood what he was talking about. the whales, the columns, the projections, the breaking ice... it looked amazing (on TV). yeah, so one cauldron didn't come out of the ground, so what. however, ils ont manqué un peu de fr... haha
anyway, looks like you guys are having a ball.
much to show & tell when you come home!!!
