Aloha from the Kona area of the Big Island.
We just got back in from the beach, just across the street from our condo. The sunset was great as usual. There is something about sunsets with palm trees in the foreground that makes it even more special. (I have added 2 pictures)
We drove up north along the coast just to explore and found a few nice beaches. One we knew about, Hapuna Beach (1 of the top 10 in the world, so "they" say). The other one was at Waialea Bay. It has lots of palms for shade, great white sand and the nicest looking water. Plus there seems to be lots of coral/rocks out a bit, so you know there is lots of good snorkling. We will go back for the day tomorrow or Sunday.
On our way up north we past about 30 miles (yes miles) of old lava fields. You can see a picture below. It just looks like miles and miles of black rock for as far as the eye can see. Some places have a bit of plant life but mostly just rock. There are 2 different kinds of dried lava. One looks like jagged rocks all over and the other looks like mounds of cow crap... only on a much larger scale.
We took a road cross county and went up into the mountains and came out on the other coast. It was 86f (at 10:00) when we started up into the mountains. They are not big mountains, I think the highest part was 3600 feet. The thing we noticed however, besides it dropping down to a nice 74, was that it was a lot greener. It is very dry this time of year down on this coast.
We ended up finding a statue of King Kamehameha. He was the King who united the Hawaiian Islands many many years ago. I guess before that all they did was fight :) I have no idea why... so hot and so beautiful all I would want to do is be at a beach.
Tomorrow is July 4th and we will take in the parade and fireworks and celebrate with the locals.
Good night from here and Good morning to you.
