July 4 the Kona area (home base)

Sorry to have to say this but another hot sunny day here!

We spent a few hours in the morning visiting the local market. You would not believe how cheap some things are! We got 4 papayas for $1.00. Also got to see some real different fruit. I'm holding one of them below. This one, we were told, is what juicy fruit gum is flavoured with. It is very heavy and dangerous looking. We also found some amazing tropical plants (picture below) for just $5.00 a bunch as well as leis (Greg is smelling some fresh ones). After the market we just walked around downtown. The picture you see below of a beach with a grass looking hut in the background is an ancient Hawaii site. We could not get very close since it is sacred ground and I guess "WE" are not pure enough.

Came back in time for a 4th of July BBQ at our pool (pool is below). We just spent most of the early afternoon around the pool enjoying the HEAT. The water is almost like bath water, really.
We then headed into town to watch the parade from a Mexican restaurant. We were lucky since it was happy hour and drinks were cheap. My Mai Tai (picture below) was good. Mike and Greg enjoyed the $2.00 beers too.

After the parade we came back to the condo for a quick bite and then headed off to watch the fireworks. It gets dark here about 7:30, so we didn't have to wait until 10:30 like home.

The last picture in this bunch is of a gecko (a baby) who was catching a lift with us.

Another part of this journey is almost over. We have one more full day in this area before we pack up and head south to the lava. It is weird because we are about 2 1/2 hours from it but the sky is always dark and smokey if you look in that direction.

Stay warm!

  1. Well,it's another overcast/rainy day here..they just go on and on. Glad you're having such great weather. Can you bring me back one of those arrangements from the market????Don't you wish you could eh? They're so beautiful and cheap!! I guess the markets must be the place that the Hawaiian people can actually afford to buy food. We'll be very interested to hear how you like the Big Island compared to Maui.Keep on having fun!!!
