July 6 On our way to Hilo

Aloha from the Hilo side ( a little late because our wireless at the house is not working)

We packed up our stuff in the Kona area and headed south along the coast and then into the mountains. It isn’t always about the destination, at times you have to enjoy the journey too. About an hour or so into our trip we ventured off the main road and headed down a narrow 12 miles road to the shore. After we parked the car and took a few pictures of the jagged lava coast we headed off for a 45 minute walk to find what so many before us had set out to find. The coast was very wild and the wind and waves even wilder. However, the sun was out and it was a beautiful coastal kind of day, you know the kind if you ever walked on PEI. It was about 29 C but very windy.
So after walking through lava rock fields, dusty yellow/golden sand we came to our treasure… green sand beach. The only thing… we were in Crocs and sandals and well the cliff walk down to the beach wasn’t something we wanted to try. You can see by the pictures it was pretty cool.
After we got back to the car and had lunch we set off to find the next different beach. The next one we could drive right up to, so that was a bonus. I read the sea turtles lay their eggs on this beach. You can see why… BLACK SAND. It was nice and soft, amazingly enough. We did spot a few turtles in the surf but they were just eating off the rocks.
Our next stop was Volcano National Park. We just got some info and watched the little movie about it all and will visit it for the full day tomorrow.

We arrived at our house/condo, which just happens to be in a rain forest in the middle of no where (well there are a few other neighbours). We went to the lock box with the code to get the key and the code would not work! We tried for about 5 minutes. I went and got the cell phone thinking I was going to call the owner back in California… well surprise surprise… no cell service J Meanwhile Greg was trying… for some reason he tried a different code HOW LUCKY…. The owner gave us 2121 and he tried 1212… well let’s just say we are in. The place is amazing, as you can see the pictures.
We quickly looked around and unpacked and headed off into the small town Pahoa, which is near. Well in one of our books it called this town a cute little western looking town… but there was a friendly warning… this town and area is kind of like the wild west and one shouldn’t be there after dark. Well by the look of some of the locals I could see that J We couldn’t find a grocery store there anyway so we headed off to Hilo which was only 12 miles away. Got some food and had a bit to eat and headed back. It was now about 7:30 which is dark here. When we pulled back into the house it was real dark but the sounds… the rainforest at night. The geckos sounded like our spring peeper frogs. It was kind of funny because this house and windows all around and the guys thought the noise would keep them up. Well it didn’t. It did rain a lot during the night so we do have a slight sense of how you are feeling in Fredericton. … I did say ‘slight’!
One thing you might have noticed if you are reading our blog everyday… we couldn’t get the wireless to work. Will contact the owners and see if it is even possible.

PS It is actually cool here… the bed will feel good
